Today marks the release of Karen Yeh's second single, "Misty," now available on all music streaming platforms. This marks Yeh's very first full string arrangement, written with the guidance of her co-producer, Connor Style Vance.
Yeh reached out to Vance a year and a half ago with a desire to learn string arranging and audio mixing. From late 2024 to present, the two have been meeting to cover aspects of production, engineering, mixing, jazz theory, and arranging. With Vance's instruction, Yeh was able to build the arrangement from the ground up, recording out of her home studio and mixing the audio alongside Vance.
The choice of "Misty" was a natural one. Yeh bought her first jazz album at age 14 - a compilation of songs performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. She was immediately hooked. Ella's pure voice stayed with her ever since, and when she first heard Fitzgerald's rendition of "Misty," something in those soaring lines inspired her to play it on the cello.
Though the arrangement is written for string quartet, listeners will hear what sounds like a 16-piece chamber ensemble. Vance and Yeh recorded and stacked each part four times, creating the illusion of a much larger group.
This is just the first of many projects the two have planned together. Vance also directed a music video filmed at Yeh's home studio, featuring musicians Laurann Angel and Alex Mansour. Watch the video below.
